.history.

Born to a family of Kilian mages, Donovan was the first and only child of his parents. His life was fairly uneventful throughout most of his childhood, wherein his father taught him to cast dark magic. His mother, more predisposed toward the elemental magics, tried to teach Donovan to use them, but he had no talent at them.

Donovan, 19 years old, and his father were out in a field training one day when Donovan's father lost control of a particularly powerful spell. The spell went wild, filling the clearing with energy. Donovan's father yelled at him to run, but Donovan was paralyzed by fear. Within a few minutes, the spell's energy was entirely out of control, and Donovan was blasted hard against a nearby tree. The energy blinded him in his right eye, and he lost consciousness for about a half-hour. By the time he came to, his father was dead, the spell having taken everything out of him.

He returned to his home, and with quite some difficulty told his mother what had happened. Horrified, she demanded that Donovan cease his study of the dark magics, citing that he had already lost his eye and stood to lose far more. In order to put her fears at ease, Donovan agreed--but continued studying in private, determined to master the power that his father had lost control of.

His studies began to consume his life. He ate little and slept less, and spent about five years of his life doing little besides studying the magic. His mother was not as blind as he thought, however, and noticed the dark tomes lining his wall. Upset, she tried to hide his books from time to time, but he always found them and immediately began studying again, completely ignoring her in the process. Finally, his heartbroken mother left home to live with her sister, Donovan's aunt.

He never noticed.

Now 25, he lives alone at home, still unaware that his mother left home almost a year ago. His home has fallen into general disrepair, as Donovan is too busy studying to look after it.

.personality.

Studious to a fault, some might call Donovan power-hungry or something similar. He ignores these claims, believing himself to be nothing more than a scholar. His studies are the one thing that matter most to him in his life--more than his mysteriously absent mother, more than his former friends (which he has not seen most of since his blinding six years ago), more than food or sleep or general health. He often falls asleep over his books at an inane hour of the night, only to wake up at odd hours of the morning and immediately resume his studies.

Those who still occasionally see him from time to time claim that his soul has been consumed by the dark magics he uses. In a way, this is true, since it seems all he lives for is to master these powers. He has little interest in anything unrelated to dark magic.

He believes that through mastering these powers, he can prevent any more accidents like the one that blinded his right eye and killed his father. He knows there is a real risk associated with the studies he's absorbed in, but does not care.

In conversation, his quiet demeanor often comes off as unfriendly--which it kind of is, in a way. Humans, to him, have become just another piece of the world that require study like everything else. Through study, he believes that humans are just as easy to understand as a passage of text or a piece of art.

He also believes that all humans have the potential for evil somewhere inside them, and that this potential is what caused his father to lose control of his magic. It's a sort of twisted philosophy he has: all people are capable of both good and evil. Some just embrace their darkness over their light.

When he speaks or writes, he tends to be very straightforward and blunt, and has little regard for tact of any kind. He seems almost rude, but really, just doesn't see a distinction between honesty and rudeness. He sees no need for restraint in social situations, and thinks that the amount people lie is absolutely ridiculous.

.appearance.

Skinny and tall, he has short black hair and one grey-green eye--his left. His right eye is almost always covered by bandages, underneath which the eye is completely smoke-grey and blind. He has a somewhat feminine face, with long eyelashes. He's very lanky, as if he never quite got out of puberty, and tends to wear very plain, casual clothing, often in regular colors like black and white.
